Mikey stood in the small station once again. He’d scaled the stairs and walked right up to the outside entrance. The dead shuffled and moaned relentlessly. Nothing outside had changed. Mikey didn’t care. He wanted to talk to his friend again.

He moved closer to the mesh wrapped around the debris that blocked the gate. It had been a long time since anyone had raised the gate.

“Hey, Mikey,” the voice called to him. “Nice to see you again.”

“Who are you?”

“Your friend. Don’t you remember?”

“Yes.”

“Cool. Y’know, I wish I could come inside and play with you.”

“Me too.”

“It gets cold out here at night, Mikey. And, when it rains… oh, gee… I get all soaking wet.”

“You do?”

“Oh, yeah. Really wet. I would really like to come in with you and get warm. Will you help me?”

“Yes. What do I do?”

“Can you loosen the stuff blocking the gate? Just loosen it a little so I can move it. Do you think you can do that?”

“I’ll try.” Mikey reached for the mesh and grabbed a handful with his chubby hands. He pulled and pulled, only managing to get a corner of it off the debris and other junk piled up against the gate.

“Mikey!” His brother Elijah called from across the station. “We’re not allowed over here.” He rushed to his little brother and grabbed his wrist.

“No, Elijah… I have to help my friend.”

“What are you talking about?” Elijah furrowed his brow and glanced at the blocked gate. His eyes were tired and he was having a hard time focusing. “Are you crazy? There’s nothing but monsters out there.”

“No. My friend is out there. He’s cold.”

“Mikey, stop it.” There was anger in Elijah’s voice now. “Nobody could be out there. The monsters would get them. They would eat them up.” He finished with a yawn.

“Yes, he is. He talks to me.”

“Cut it out. Now come back to bed before we get into trouble. We’re not supposed to be here. Those are the rules. Now, c’mon.” Elijah yanked Mikey away from the gate and dragged him across the station.

“Oww. You’re hurting me.”

“Then stop dragging your feet. C’mon, if anyone finds us, we’ll get into a lot of trouble. You need to stay away from this station and tunnel. It’s not safe.”

Mikey kept looking back at the entrance as he left with his brother.

“Sheri! Sheri! No!” Liam thrashed in his sleep until someone grabbed a hold of him. He flinched and woke with a start.

“Liam!” Reed shouted. ‘It’s okay… wake up, man. It’s just a dream.”

Liam caught his breath and looked around. He saw Reed standing over him and waved him off, nodding. “I’m all right.” He sat up on the cot and rubbed his face. Sweat dampened his palm.

“Wife again?”

Liam nodded. “Yep.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t mention it. It’s nothing. I think it’s time for a meeting. Can you go send word to Seamus?”

“You got it.”

He watched Reed head away from the platform and down into the tunnels. Liam coughed a little, then looked over at Amy, who had somehow remained asleep during his outburst.
